Commercial Analysis

Gatorade

Target Audience: Athletes

What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)?

Celebrity, they used many athletes and other celebrities to advertise their product.

How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message?

The all black backdrop made the commercial more sophisticated and gave Gatorade a higher profile look

What is the slogan/message for the company?

The meaning of "G", which can be many things that go with just being an athlete, musician, etc.

Was the message effective? Why or why not?

I think so, it makes the drink look more appealing and the celebrity factor gives people the incentive to buy it.

What persuasive method used?

Humor, the crystal ball being thrown at his boss/vending machine was funny and makes the product look enjoyable.

The focus on the two main characters (the two men) as well as the chips made the commercial enhance the factor of enjoyment.

What is the slogan/message for the company?
That Doritos is a snack that can be associated with the young culture's spontaneous and carefree nature

Was the message effective?
Yes, the commercial didn't take itself seriously and it shows Doritos are a lighthearted product.

Commercial Analysis

Company: Pepsi

Target Audience: Young Adults

What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)?
Humor was definitely the method used with this commercial. This is a perfect example of ridiculous humor that is used often in late-00's advertising. Also, this is based off of a Saturday Night Live sketch, something that ties the celebrity factor in.

How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message?
There were many explosions and themes from action films that made MacGruber look like a cliche action character.

What is the slogan/message for the company?
That the drink's new look is coinciding with the end of the decade, as well as a new era of entertainment being among us.

Was the message effective? Why or why not?
I believe so, and I think that the implementation of the SNL skit was a smart move.

Commercial Analysis

Company: Cash4Gold

Target Audience: Young Adults/Adults

What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)?
Humor and celebrity were used in this commercial. The humorous use of has-beens like Hammer is amusing, especially with the ridiculous idea of trading in gold for money.

How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message?
It was shot like any low-budget company's commercial that airs at 4 a.m. on Comedy Central. I'm actually surprised this aired during the Super Bowl. It seems that the economic crisis has really given this company some cash...for gold.

What is the slogan/message for the company?
To trade in your useless jewelry for money, and that even the one-hit wonder Hammer uses it.

Was the message effective? Why or why not?
I think it is effective in it's own way, everybody is trying to find a way to get money nowadays. Cash rules everything around us.

Commercial Analysis

Company: Hulu

Target Audience: 18-34 Age Range

What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)?
Celebrity and humor once again. They used Alec Baldwin to advertise Hulu, basically an online television.

How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message?
The strong focus on Alec Baldwin's expressions are clearly inspired by the brilliant television show 30 Rock. His role in the program is a surefire way to advertise something like Hulu.

What is the slogan/message for the company?
That its a new trend and everybody should follow it, even the great Alec Baldwin.

Was the message effective? Why or why not?
Yes, in fact I went to Hulu to see what is was all about. You can watch episodes of his show 30 Rock there, it's pretty awesome. Possibly the most effective out of the commercials.
